Exosomes are 30?100 nm diameter extracellular vesicles of endocytic origin that are released by most cell types upon fusion of multivesicular bodies with the plasma membrane. They are presumably as a vehicle for intercellular communication. Exosomes have pleiotropic biological functions in cancer development, including angiogenesis, immune surveillance, antigen presentation, intracellular communication by transfer of RNAs and proteins. Recent findings that exosomes contain mRNAs and microRNAs that can be transferred to another cell and be functional in that recipient cells, have initiated many microRNA profiling studies of exosomes circulating in blood. These studies highlight the potential of exosomal microRNA profiles for use as diagnostic biomarkers of disease through a noninvasive manner. The current studies indicated the existence of tumor-associated exosomes that carrying tumor-specific antigens on their lipid membranes. The aim of this talk is to provide a brief overview of exosomes, including their biological functions, methods used to isolate, and characterize cancer-specific exosomes in the blood and urine of the cancer patients.
