The field of neurobiology requires multidisciplinary approach in order to understand the brain functions. Our lab is trying to understand the relationship between brain and systemic microenvironment such as blood and bone marrow, in aging and pathological conditions including neurodegenerative disease. To investigate this, we employ cellular and molecular biology, as well as genetic, biophysical, and behavioral approaches. The final goal of our research is to establish new therapeutic and diagnostic targets for aging and neurodegenerative disease.
In this talk, I will introduce the regulation of sphingolipid metabolism in aging and neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease and Niemann-Pick type C disease. The studies include molecular, biological, physiological and pathophysiological studies of sphingolipid metabolism in brain, blood, bone marrow and other organs. Also, will talk the understanding and regulation of neural and bone marrow stem cell niche by nervous system or blood-borne factors in normal and pathological condition. The studies focus on the establishment of original technology and development of stem cell therapeutics for neurodegenerative disease, osteoporosis, cancer, and other diseases. Finally, I will have a presentation for disease modeling of neurodegenerative disease using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology. The studies include investigating disease development and models in vitro, as well as examining pathophysiology and testing therapeutic agents.
