An urban myth that is widely believed in Asia is that American farmers grow GMOs entirely for export, but that Americans do not eat the foods derived from them. Nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed, Americans having been eating GMOs since 1995. Worldwide Americans are both the biggest producers and the biggest consumers of GMOs. GMOs are now grown in 28 different countries on about 175 million hectares about evenly divided between developed and developing countries. The main crops are cotton, maize, soybeans, rapeseed (canola), sugar beets and alfalfa. All major health agencies in the world and all scientific bodies that have studied the matter have unanimously concluded that there are no health hazards associated with eating foods made from GMOs and that growing GMOs has many benefits for the environment. In addition, there are substantial financial benefits for the farmers which is why many farmers grow them without waiting for government approval.
