Da Vinci said “Human ingenuity may make various inventions, but it will never devise any inventions more beautiful, nor more simple, nor more to the purpose than Nature does; because in her inventions nothing is wanting and nothing is superfluous”. In the history of mankind, many leading discoveries have been prompted by parallel between nature and human design. The diverse designs observed in natural materials has motivated materials scientists to reveal the hidden design secrets of these materials, in the hope that they can be used to create new synthetic materials with more beneficial properties. In this talk, several examples of natural materials with design induced multifunctionalities so far well studied will be demonstrated and the related mimicking means will be introduced. Particularly, atomic layer deposition (ALD) based biotemplates approaches will be exemplified from motivation to realization.
