Crop loss due to devastating diseases caused by various pathogenic microbes is estimated to be 30% of total plant biomass. It is critical to better understand the molecular basis of plant innate immunity in order to increase productivity/biomass. Animals and plants detect the presence of pathogenic microbes via specialised immune receptors. The recognition of pathogen molecules by plant immune receptors leads to an activation of signalling cascades, culminating in many intracellular defence responses including changes in gene expression in the nucleus. Plant immune receptors confer recognition of microbial effectors (microbial proteins that are translocated to host cells to enhance pathogen fitness) and activate immune responses. To improve genetic quality of plant immunity, it is essential to understand the mechanisms by which immune receptors recognize pathogen molecules and activate signalling events. Recent advances in understanding plant immune receptor functions and molecular breeding strategies will be presented.
