*ABSTRACT
The flowering of Arabidopsis winter annual ecotype is delayed until next spring due to a strong floral repressor, FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). FRIGIDA (FRI) activates the transcription of FLC, but the molecular mechanism remains elusive. Here we report that FRI acts as a scaffold protein interacting with FLC specific activators, FRL1, FES1, SUF4 and SUF5 to form a novel transcription complex (FRI-C). Each component of FRI-C has specialized function; SUF4 binds to the cis-element of FLC promoter, SUF5 and FES1 have transcriptional activation potential, and FRL1 strengthens the protein complex. In addition, FRI-C interacts with other transcriptional cofactors such as SWR1 complex, TAF14 homolog, and EFS, a SET2 homolog. Our data provide insights into how specific transcriptional activator such as FRI-C mediates transcriptional process working together with chromatin modifiers and general transcription machinery to regulate plant developmental process, flowering.
