Many complex behaviors are first learned by emulating the behavior of other more experienced individuals. Speech and language are prominent examples of behaviors learned through imitation, but the social transmission of behaviors is also a broadly important form of learning in many social species. Vocal imitation in songbirds is perhaps the best studied example of a socially transmitted complex behavior. In this talk I will discuss my laboratories recent studies revealing basic principles for how young birds form memories of their fathers song, how dopaminergic reward circuits facilitate motor learning, and how precise neural sequences necessary for song production are first initiated in freely singing birds.
