Recent studies have identified memory engram cells, a population of neurons that is activated by associative learning and whose reactivation results in memory recall. Engram cells play pivotal roles in associative emotional learning. However, it remains unknown how memory engram cells in different brain areas are connected to one another, as well as how the synaptic strength of these connections is modified to encode an associative memory. In this talk, I will describe our recent work on how selective strengthening of engram cell pathways contributes to encoding associative memory in rodent models of fear conditioning.
