Animals and plants detect the presence of pathogenic microbes via nucleotide-binding oligomerization (NB) domain and leucine rich repeat (LRR) immune receptors (NLR). The recognition of pathogen molecules by NLRs leads to an activation of signalling cascades, culminating in many intracellular defence responses including changes in gene expression in the nucleus. Plant NLRs confer recognition of microbial effectors (proteins that are translocated to host cells to enhance pathogen fitness) and activate immune responses. In order to improve genetic quality of plant immunity, it is critical to better understand the NLR-dependent immune signalling events. Recent advances in plant NLR function and molecular breeding strategies to establish durable disease resistance in crops will be presented.
